Description
Keep factory keyless entry in the Civic radio upgrade
Metra 70-1720T Keyless Entry Retention Radio Harness for Honda Civic 1996–1998
Retains the original radio connection needed by the factory keyless-entry security system.
For the 1996–1998 Honda Civic application, the guide specifies EX trim with factory keyless entry.
Overview
Replacing the receiver in a 1996–1998 Honda Civic with factory keyless entry takes more than disconnecting the original radio. The Metra 70-1720T incorporates that security-system connection into the aftermarket installation. The factory radio stays connected and is relocated behind the lower dash as described in the instructions, while color-coded leads connect to the new receiver. The harness also provides radio power and four-speaker connections.
Retain and relocate the factory radio
Do not discard the original radio. The instructions route the factory wiring behind the lower console, connect the factory security plug and Metra harness to the original receiver, then position that receiver behind the lower dash between the metal supports. Test both radio and keyless-entry operation before securing the installation. Metra references the 99-7891 or 89-30-7891 mounting instructions; mounting parts are separate from this harness.
